California's landmark climate change legislation -- AB 32 -- is under attack! Big Oil is leading a statewide mis-information campaign to delay the implementation of CA's groundbreaking cap-and-trade program. 16 California Democrats have already been swayed by Big Oil's deep pockets. We must have the courage to stand together and call on Gov. Brown to publicly state his plans to ensure AB 32 is fully implemented as it was intended.
The Supreme Court's "Hobby Lobby" decision -- which gave employers the right to impose their religious beliefs on employees and stripped the right to affordable birth control from women -- was one of the largest setbacks for women's health in decades. We must act now and demand our leaders in Washington stand up for the rights of women and support a bill that was just introduced to override the disastrous Hobby Lobby decision.
CarMax -- the biggest used car retailer in the country -- gives consumers the impression that it's done everything possible to make a used car safe -- claiming that their “certified” cars have undergone a rigorous, “125+ point inspection.” But according to The New York Times, "CarMax's 'Certified Quality Inspection'...does not include fixing recalls." Meanwhile, they took in nearly $11 billion in revenue last year. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has the power to fight back and stop CarMax's dangerously deceptive advertising practices. But they will only act if they hear from people like YOU who have the courage to care.
National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has spent the last seven years spreading hate and bigotry across the country, and now it's time to say, "so long." Courage Campaign members have been on the frontlines, fighting back against NOM's same, old, tired attacks on equality every step of the way. And we've won! So, in NOM's last gasp effort to try and take down marriage equality during their “March for Marriage,” let's thank them for their years of hard work and failed efforts against marriage equality, and wish them farewell.
Seriously, on what planet does Rick Perry live?! At a recent event in San Francisco, the controversial GOP leader compared homosexuality to the serious disease of alcoholism in defense of so-called “gay conversion therapy” -- a widely discredited and immeasurably harmful practice used to “cure” being gay. Sign the petition to tell Gov. Perry to join the rest of us who live in reality and STOP promoting hateful, ignorant, and harmful anti-LGBT policies.
Courageous protesters are marching -- 480 miles from Los Angeles to Sacramento -- to raise awareness and mobilize the public around the issue of big money corruption in politics. Can you come out and join them even for one day? They'll be reaching the Capitol on June 22nd. JOIN THEM!
California may have the strongest gun laws in the nation, but the recent shooting rampage in Isla Vista reminds us that we must do even more to prevent gun violence. And now we have an opportunity to address the specific instances that led to the Isla Vista tragedy -- by making sure people at risk for violence do not have immediate access to firearms.
We must keep up the pressure on the Sultan of Brunei to stop the draconian laws in his country! The Sultan -- also the owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel, Hotel Bel Air, and other worldwide hotels in the Dorchester Collection -- recently adopted extreme anti-LGBT and anti-women Sharia law, including the legalized stoning to death of gay people and the jailing of unwed mothers. Join us to support a global boycott of the Sultan’s hotels.
Crack and powder cocaine are the same drug, with nearly identical effect on the body. But crack cocaine is punished much more harshly and that doesn’t make any sense. These disparate sentencing guidelines have resulted in a pattern of institutional racism in our prisons. Tell the CA State Senate to pass a historic reform bill that will save taxpayer dollars and make our criminal justice system more fair.
Big Oil magnate John Scully and his wife Regina Scully donated $102,000 to a ballot measure committee set up by San Rafael Assemblymember Marc Levine. The money paid for a mailer that actually claims Marc Levine is AGAINST fracking, even though the guy paying for it is making a fortune PROFITING from fracking. This just stinks of foul play. If Asm. Levine wants to represent his constituents, he needs to reject Big Oil and not just with words.
It is unconscionable that the first openly gay NFL player, Michael Sam, could be fired simply for his sexual orientation. When Americans can still be legally fired for being gay in 29 states and for being transgender in 33 states, we must take this opportunity to shine light on this legal discrimination in America and send President Obama a message he can't ignore.
Due to a loophole in California law, car dealers are allowed to sell used cars without repairing safety recalls first. An analysis by CarFax shows that 36 million cars on the road right now -- or roughly one in seven -- are subject to a safety-related recall but have never been repaired. It's obvious that the law needs to change, but the car dealers are lobbying furiously because they don't want to bother repairing the cars before they make another sale.
The people of California are hurting. Badly. We have the highest poverty rate in the nation. More than $36 billion in funding for education, childcare, healthcare, nutrition, and housing were slashed during the Great Recession and have yet to be restored. Budget negotiations are going on RIGHT NOW, and instead of using new Prop. 30 revenue to restore funding to vital services, Governor Jerry Brown is hoping to fund prison expansion and stash billions away for the next rainy day. Well, we've got news for the governor: it's still raining!
California’s students deserve better. After years of budget cuts, most of our students have no access to medical care or counseling services during the school day and library hours at their schools have been cut back dramatically, but there is a new initiative in Sacramento that could help change that. It’s called "Healthy Kids, Healthy Minds" and would be implemented through Assembly Bill 1955.
In the past few decades, CEO compensation has skyrocketed to as much as 354 times more than their average worker, while workers’ wages have stagnated to some of the lowest levels in our nation’s history. Senate Bill 1372 is an important first step to combat this growing disparity by creating a tax structure that rewards companies that have a reasonable CEO-to-worker pay ratio, while increasing taxes on companies with excessive wage gaps.
The audio recording that allegedly features LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling on a racist and sexist rant -- telling his girlfriend that she can’t be seen with black people in public -- is appalling. And this is not the first time Sterling has been accused of such disgraceful prejudice and hostility. Send an email to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver saying, "enough is enough."
