VICTORY: LIFE Act passes California Senate
Thanks to YOUR support of the Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement (LIFE) Act, California is now 33% percent of the way toward the safest, smartest gun laws in the country. All eight bills that make up the LIFE Act have passed the State Senate, and one (SB 140) has already been signed into law by Gov. Brown.
The seven bills that are not yet law must now pass the California Assembly. They include a loophole-free assault weapons ban, background checks for ammunition purchases, and an expansion of the crimes and mental conditions that make it illegal to own a gun. The Assembly vote will be very close. Several Democrats voted against the package in the Senate. Sen. Rod Wright (D-Inglewood) took to the floor prior to the vote and went on a fact-free rant, spouting NRA talking points like he was Wayne LaPierre.
The LIFE Act is based on scientifically proven solutions to gun violence, but the NRA is already pounding the Assembly with emails and phone calls. As we saw in Washington, we cannot underestimate the power of the NRA. They will stop at nothing to protect the profits of gun manufacturers.
