Holding Politicians & Corporations Accountable
Courage Campaign seeks to hold elected officials and corporations accountable when they mislead the American public, engage in unethical activity, or worse. We seek to use the power of grassroots organizing to highlight these misdeeds and leverage public pressure in search of justice.
CarMax -- the biggest used car retailer in the country -- gives consumers the impression that it's done everything possible to make a used car safe -- claiming that their “certified” cars have undergone a rigorous, “125+ point inspection.” But according to The New York Times, "CarMax's 'Certified Quality Inspection'...does not include fixing recalls." Meanwhile, they took in nearly $11 billion in revenue last year. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has the power to fight back and stop CarMax's dangerously deceptive advertising practices. But they will only act if they hear from people like YOU who have the courage to care.
Seriously, on what planet does Rick Perry live?! At a recent event in San Francisco, the controversial GOP leader compared homosexuality to the serious disease of alcoholism in defense of so-called “gay conversion therapy” -- a widely discredited and immeasurably harmful practice used to “cure” being gay. Sign the petition to tell Gov. Perry to join the rest of us who live in reality and STOP promoting hateful, ignorant, and harmful anti-LGBT policies.
Big Oil magnate John Scully and his wife Regina Scully donated $102,000 to a ballot measure committee set up by San Rafael Assemblymember Marc Levine. The money paid for a mailer that actually claims Marc Levine is AGAINST fracking, even though the guy paying for it is making a fortune PROFITING from fracking. This just stinks of foul play. If Asm. Levine wants to represent his constituents, he needs to reject Big Oil and not just with words.
Due to a loophole in California law, car dealers are allowed to sell used cars without repairing safety recalls first. An analysis by CarFax shows that 36 million cars on the road right now -- or roughly one in seven -- are subject to a safety-related recall but have never been repaired. It's obvious that the law needs to change, but the car dealers are lobbying furiously because they don't want to bother repairing the cars before they make another sale.
The people of California are hurting. Badly. We have the highest poverty rate in the nation. More than $36 billion in funding for education, childcare, healthcare, nutrition, and housing were slashed during the Great Recession and have yet to be restored. Budget negotiations are going on RIGHT NOW, and instead of using new Prop. 30 revenue to restore funding to vital services, Governor Jerry Brown is hoping to fund prison expansion and stash billions away for the next rainy day. Well, we've got news for the governor: it's still raining!
In the past few decades, CEO compensation has skyrocketed to as much as 354 times more than their average worker, while workers’ wages have stagnated to some of the lowest levels in our nation’s history. Senate Bill 1372 is an important first step to combat this growing disparity by creating a tax structure that rewards companies that have a reasonable CEO-to-worker pay ratio, while increasing taxes on companies with excessive wage gaps.
The audio recording that allegedly features LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling on a racist and sexist rant -- telling his girlfriend that she can’t be seen with black people in public -- is appalling. And this is not the first time Sterling has been accused of such disgraceful prejudice and hostility. Send an email to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver saying, "enough is enough."
Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has received criminal charges for their gross negligence in the 2010 fatal explosion in San Bruno, California, but PG&E executives have consistently avoided any potential responsibility for their role in the disaster that killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes. At the same time PG&E has taken home record profits and refused to adopt critical safety measures. Demand prosecutors hold PG&E executives personally accountable!
Courage Campaign and our allies have launched an unprecedented step to take back our state government from corporate corruption. It's called the Big Oil Beacon, and it will shine a bright light on the toxic influence of the most powerful corporate lobbyists in Sacramento, while exposing the economic devastation facing Californians in specific legislators' districts. See whether your representative is working for YOU or Big Oil here.
We’ve kept the heat on WGBH, demanding they remove prominent climate change denier David Koch from their Board. And now we have a huge opportunity to take our work to the next level. With the help of our friends The Illuminators, a contribution today will allow us to "shine a light” on WGBH’s hypocrisy for all to see. We'll project our message on the side of their headquarters on March 28th in Boston during their event on climate change, other activists will go even further and take their protest inside. To be successful, we need you to donate to make it happen!
With all the known health and environmental risks of hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a “fracking”), California, a supposed climate change leader, must change course on fracking! That’s why member-activists like you must have the courage to demand our state legislators support a statewide ban on fracking NOW. Tell your leaders in Sacramento to protect Californians from the dangers of fracking!
After the Tea Party forced billions in cuts to SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) a.k.a. "food stamps," a bipartisan group of governors from around the country are fighting back to both follow the new SNAP funding rules AND make sure their states get the proper funding for vital food assistance. Join Courage and our partners at Daily Kos and ask Gov. Brown to join the governors of six other states and restore access to basic food assistance for 320,000 of the poorest Californians, including 186,000 children.
Americans can still be legally fired for being gay in 29 states and for being transgender in 33 states. The Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to address this problem, but Speaker Boehner refuses to take it up in the House. President Obama has an opportunity to protect as many as 16 million federal workers from discrimination with the swipe of his pen, and we think he should do it right now!
Today 40 million Americans hold more than $1.2 Trillion in student debt and it's suffocating our economy. It wasn't so long ago that California prioritized providing an accessible, debt-free higher education that ignited our economy, providing good jobs and an educated workforce. We can change this by joining all other major oil producing states -- like Texas and Alaska -- and passing an oil extraction tax to fund higher education. Let your representatives in Sacramento know you’re watching and help give them the courage to stand up to Big Oil.
February 26th is “lobby day” in Sacramento for Big Oil, and we know they will use their same old tricks to block a long overdue oil extraction tax -- which would provide critical funding for our state’s childcare, preschool, higher education, and parks. Let your representatives in Sacramento know you’re watching and help give them the courage to refuse any and all contributions or gifts from oil lobbyists and say NO to Big Oil!
Google, Facebook and Yelp just teamed up with the anti-Obamacare, right-wing extremist group ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) -- who are behind ultra-conservative legislation like the controversial “Stand Your Ground” gun laws and discriminatory Voter I.D. laws. Major corporations like Wal-Mart, Kraft, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, McDonalds, and Amazon have already had the courage to drop ALEC due to the organization’s ultra-conservative and controversial agenda. DEMAND Google, Facebook, and Yelp show the same courage and cut all ties with this anti-Obamacare extremist group immediately!
